Frank L. Romano
An Incredible High School and College Basketball Player Becomes One of Pingry’s Most Beloved Coaches During his twenty-six year tenure at Pingry, Frank L. Romano played many roles. He was a teacher, an advisor, and an administrator who excelled in every position. He coached soccer and baseball. However, his time spent on the basketball court coaching the Big Blue team from victory to victory has forever earned him a spot in the heart of Pingry alumni. Coach Romano began his basketball career at Weatherly High School where he held the title of leading scorer with 1,932 points in three years. He went on to George Washington University and then to Susquehanna University where, in just two and a half seasons, he scored 1,440 points. In 1959 Frank arrived at Pingry as a math teacher and coach of the boys Varsity basketball team. As the basketball coach, Frank helped his team beat many school and state records. Coach Romano led the 1976-77 basketball team to 18 victories, making it the most winning team in Pingry history. Frank went on to become the Assistant Headmaster for Faculty Affairs and the Dean of Boys. In an interview with the Pingry Record, Coach Romano spoke about his love of coaching and basketball. He said: “Basketball has been very good to me and is one of the closest things to my heart. Because I have been a small part of their lives as a coach, it makes it worthwhile and perhaps even more important than being their math teacher."
