Edward Scott, Jr.
A Legend in High School Track and Cross Country Guided Pingry Athletes to Nine Prep and Parochial State Titles Career Record of 343-141-3 It is rare for an individual to receive universal praise from everyone he has come in contact with, but that is exactly what one hears from the people who know Edward Scott, Jr. Scott devoted nearly 27 years to Pingry as a track and cross country coach and his runners were equally devoted to him. Those who ran for “Coach Scott” speak of his kindness, loyalty, cutting-edge use of visualization techniques and constant encouragement to work harder and improve oneself. “Coach Scott led by example,” noted a Pingry alumnus. “You wanted to run well for him because you knew how much he was sacrificing to give us all he had.” Scott influenced hundreds of students as a teacher and a coach. During his years as Pingry’s head track coach, he created a well-rounded and strong program. Setting a career record of 343-141-3, he guided Pingry athletes to nine Prep and Parochial State titles. The victories were nice, but for Scott, the true measure of a runner’s success was the realization of one’s own potential. He focused on the individual runner and taught dedication, and respect for the sport and the individual. The Ed Scott Invitational Middle School Cross Country Meet has become a highlight of the school year. His dedication has left a lasting impact on Pingry’s athletic program.
