Guy Harrington Leedom ’54
Gridiron Captain, Superb on the Baseball Diamond, Skillful on the Basketball Court Seven Varsity letters, a state basketball championship, and an undefeated football season are just a sampling of the accomplishments of Guy H. Leedom ‘54. In just three years at Pingry, Leedom racked up an impressive record of athletic achievement. “Guy is the answer to all coaches’ prayers,” noted the 1954 edition of The Blue Book. Each season found Leedom involved on the playing field. As a senior, he was captain of the football team, a leading member of the undefeated Varsity football squad his junior year, and a critical component in Pingry’s defeat of Delbarton on the gridiron in the fall of ‘51 and ‘52. His heroic efforts on the football field earned him Second Team All-State and First Team All-Union County. Leedom was no less impressive on the basketball court. His prowess helped the school’s team win the state basketball championship in 1953. Perhaps no place was Leedom more graceful than on the baseball diamond. Consistently a clutch player, Leedom seemed almost always behind a Big Blue victory, both offensively and defensively. He was selected to the All-State (Prep) baseball team and the All-Union County baseball team, both in 1954. After Pingry, Leedom pursued baseball and football at Colgate. His love of sport led him to a career with Sports Illustrated.
