Hughes Westcott “Scotty” Cunningham ’38
All-State Athlete in Basketball Baseball, and Football and Winner of 13 Varsity Letters in Four Sports Outstanding athlete, former headmaster, and parent of two Pingry graduates, “Scotty” Cunningham lettered at Pingry in football, baseball, basketball and track, and later at the College of William and Mary in football, track, and basketball. Named to All-State Group 3 teams in baseball, football and basketball, he twice medaled in New Jersey State Championship Track Meets in the 440-yard dash and 880-yard run and helped set a new Pingry team record in the Penn Relays. Voted “Union County Iron Heart of the Winter” for dual participation in basketball and winter track, he ran in the New York University Relays, medaled in the Newark Star-Ledger Indoor Relays and helped win championship gold in the Union County Pre/Parochial High School Relays. This Varsity Baseball Team Captain was also President of the Student Council, Editor of The Pingry Record, and winner of Pingry’s coveted 1902 Emblem. Co-Captain of William and Mary’s 1943 Track Team and President of the Student Body, he medaled twice in the 440-yard dash at the Virginia State Championships and placed in both the Duke Relays and the Southern Conference Championships at the University of North Carolina. A Captain in the U.S. Navy, decorated World War II veteran and career educator, he founded and served as President of the Christopher Newport College of the College of William and Mary, before returning to serve Pingry as headmaster from 1970-1980 and as President from 1980-1982.
