John Manvel ’39
Three Sport Athlete Succeeds Year Round. The 1939 Bluebook describes John as “consistently prominent in all school activities.” This description is most appropriate for his athletic record in which John proved his worth in three sports: tennis, track, and swimming. Not only was John a consistent point winner in his chosen sports, but he also served the track and swimming teams as their captain. His example as an athlete combined with his leadership skills as a captain propelled his teams to winning seasons. John was awarded the Dean Mathey trophy twice for tennis. He was a member of the tennis team during his Form IV through VI years; serving as captain as a fifth and sixth former. He swam for all four of his Upper School years, breaking pool records and serving as captain from 1937 to 1939. John proved himself on the track as a valuable member of the relay teams. Throughout his athletic career, his consistency as an athlete and as a captain earned him the respect of his peers and coaches.
