Thompson’s skill on the field earned him numerous titles and recognition, including Pingry awards for his performance on the football and lacrosse team. In 1974, he was co-captain of the 1974 football team and was named All-State First Team Football as well as All-County Football and to the list of the Top 100 New Jersey Football Players. That same year he was also appointed to the All-State Lacrosse Team and the Pingry team placed second in the state. The Pingry Record often sang his praises, noting things such as in football “Pingry’s defense was impressive behind the excellent playing of Tommy Thompson” and how he tied the score near the end of regulation for the 1975 lacrosse team’s stunning overtime win against Summit on Alumni Day in May.
Upon graduation, Thompson attended the United States Naval Academy where he played football for all four years, earning two letters, and was a member of the 1978 Holiday Bowl championship team.
